The difference between haze, transmittance, refraction and gloss August 4,2022.

Haze, transmittance, refraction, and gloss are easily confused, so what are the differences and similarities between these four before?

Haze

In layman's terms, we can understand the concept of haze as, the ability to scatter light. Light is scattered away.

The greater the haze, the stronger the material's ability to scatter light, and the less visible it is to our human eyes. For example, frosted glass, standing at the other end of the glass, the human eye cannot see the scene on the other side of the glass, but the glass is able to transmit light. (The wall can't see the other side either, but the wall blocks the light.)

In the cell phone and automotive industry, many times need to measure the parameter of haze.

The written explanation is: the ratio of the scattered light flux through the specimen and deviated from the direction of the incident light to the transmitted light flux, expressed as a percentage. Usually, only the scattered flux that deviates from the direction of incident light by more than 2.5 degrees is used to calculate haze.

Transmittance

Transmittance is relatively well understood as the ability of light to penetrate a material, and has nothing to do with the direction in which light travels through it. The higher the transmittance, the more light is transmitted. An example is the glass windows and curtains, glass windows require light transmission, curtains require as much as possible not to transmit light.

The advent of the era of intelligence, the rise of touch screens, began to have high requirements for the transmittance of many materials, many materials began to need to test the transmittance, and often, the transmittance and haze are generally required to test at the same time.

For transmittance, the written explanation is: the ratio of the luminous flux through the specimen to the luminous flux shot onto the specimen, expressed as a percentage.

Refraction

We are no stranger to the phenomenon of refraction of light, so what is the difference and connection between haze and refraction?

Refraction is a certain kind of light passing through a certain medium, the direction of propagation will change. This change in angle is certain, in terms of sensory experience, that is, you can still see the opposite scene, but the position has changed, a real example is chopsticks in the water becomes bent, but the underwater part still looks like chopsticks.

But the haze, which can be understood as a result of the material, there is a different direction of refraction, the formation of light scattering, this time, it is not possible to see the opposite scene.

Rigorously describe the refraction: light from a transparent medium oblique into another transparent medium, the direction of propagation will generally change, this phenomenon is called the refraction of light.

Glossiness

Glossiness is actually a completely different concept from the above three. The above three are all transmission phenomena for transparent objects, while glossiness is for the specular reflection of light from the surface of an object.

Glossiness can be interpreted as the subtle "roughness" of the surface of the object. The smoother the surface, the more "reflective" it is, and the brighter it is to the human eye, the higher the gloss.

Gloss is measured in a wide range of industries, and is usually measured with a gloss meter.

Written explanation: Glossiness is a physical quantity that evaluates the ability of a material surface to reflect light specularly.

light transmittance haze tester is used for all transparent and translucent parallel plane samples (plastic plates, sheets, etc.) light transmittance and haze testing, turbidity or clarity determination of liquid samples (water, beverages, etc.).
